India Launches World's Cheapest Aakash Tablet Computer

India has launched what it says is the world's cheapest touch-screen tablet computer Called Aakash, priced at just $60 ($35 for Students).

It supports web browsing and video conferencing has a three-hour battery life and two USB ports, but questions remain over how it will perform. Officials hope the computer will give digital access to students in small towns and villages across India, which lags behind its rivals in connectivity.

Rajat Agrawal, executive editor of gadget reviewers BGR India, said the 660 mhz processor from U.S. company Conexant Systems was "decent" for the price, but warned the machine seemed slow and the touch screen not very agile.

The tablet would be meant for those students who would not be able to afford Apple iPads typically cost $499. Many Web sites, including CNN and USA Today, conclude it will be priced at $35 while Business week says it could be priced at $22 or Rs. 1,100.
